Photo: Scott's Hut at Cape Evans
Built by Robert Falcon Scott's party in 1911, this is the hut from which
Scott and his men set off to reach the South Pole. They arrived at the Pole
only to discover a Norwegian flag that Roald Amundsen had placed there one
month earlier. Weakened from a lack of fresh food, the disheartened polar
party now faced an 800-mile return journey. Two of the men died along the
way. The remaining three became trapped in a blizzard and died in their
tent — only 11 miles from a food depot.
